There's a part of me that is slightly disappointed that the Ben Nevis distillery is at the foot of Ben Nevis, rather than perched precariously on the top of our highest mountain.

Ok, so it wouldn't be very practical and they might have a struggle getting the grain trucks all the way up there, but think of the views!

Ben Nevis Batch 3 is a deep golden, 47.2% ABV dram.

The nose is caramel sweet in a way that immediately puts me in mind of a good rye whiskey. Over time, there's blackberry and apple pie - right down to the buttery pastry.

Watered, fresh baked honey biscuits and freshly cut barley comes through.

In the mouth it's golden honey, with a gentle ginger spice and a delicately building heat in the finish. With water it's closer to golden syrup, the finish gentler but still a warming gingerbread spice throughout.

This is a subtle whisky, but a phenomenally tasty one that leaves you wishing for a much larger measure! 4.5 stars.

Many thanks to Master Of Malt for providing their That Boutique-y Whisky Company Advent Calendar this year.
