Mortlach was the first distillery to be set up in Dufftown, in the Speyside which region.
Although much of its production is destined for Johnnie Walker, some makes its way into single malt releases.
Mortlach Rare Old is one such release, although I'm not clear just how old or rare it actually is!
The nose is warm and sweet; a lightly spiced apple crumble with a touch of light toffee. Watered, the winter spiced apple really comes out, and a little marmalade.
In the mouth it's rich and spicy; raisins, blackcurrant jam and a gentle, oaky tannic finish that rumbles on and on. Water lightens everything up, but it's still sweet, spicy with oaky backnotes.
I like this. 3.5 stars.
