Back to Four Roses today, and another single barrel offering. However, given that this appears to be one of their core range I can't help feeling that it's missing the whole point of a single barrel bottling - the uniqueness and individuality of the barrel.

Four Roses Single Barrel is a 50% ABV bourbon with a generous 35% rye component.

The nose is relatively light; soft caramel and vanilla, with fresh cut wood in the background. Over time a few dark fruit notes appear, black cherries perhaps. Water brings older wood to the front, and perhaps a touch of tobacco too.

In the mouth it's much more powerful; dark honey with more cherries, some deep woody tannins lurking underneath and a well restrained alcohol. The flavours are intense, but don't linger particularly - the finish becomes light and gently spicy.

Watered, you lose a lot of that sticky sweet honey which is a real shame - this is definitely another one to enjoy neat. Although the flavours don't linger, they're delicious while they're present and the finish balances it out nicely - thoroughly enjoying this bourbon. 4 stars.

Many thanks to Master of Malt for providing their excellent Bourbon Advent Calendar this year.
