Coffee is a vital component of a good morning, being roughly 7 times more important than breakfast. However, not everybody wants the same thing from their morning coffee - while I might want a big, bold, caffeine-laden start to the day others may prefer a softer, gentler beginning.

This time-dependent labelling is a tightrope that Taylors often attempts to walk, not with any great success in my book. I wouldn't single out their Lazy Sunday for weekend duty, and their After Dark is a staple work-day drink. But I do understand the marketing spirit behind such names, even if they don't quite match up to my own drinking style.

Good Morning is the latest Taylors coffee to cross my cup; at a relatively low strength 3 it's clearly aiming more at the soft, gentle start to the day end of the market.

The grounds have a fairly light aroma; redcurrants and soft brown sugar with a background of roasted chestnuts. Brewed, the fruity acidity comes through stronger along with darker roasted notes.

In the mouth, it's surprisingly rich without being strong; a soft and gentle fruity sweetness with a subtle but lingering acidic bitterness in the finish. It's not as robust as I would choose to kick-start the morning, but it's a gentle and tasty coffee nonetheless - 3 stars.

Many thanks to the Fairtrade Foundation for providing this sample.
