Coffee Reviews

Coffee: A beloved caffeinated elixir made from roasted coffee beans, providing a rich and aromatic cup of energy that fuels both mornings and conversations.

This blog may have started out focused on beer, but it wouldn't exist without the restorative and energising power of coffee (and nor, I suspect, would much of the rest of the Internet!)

We also have a coffee list which lists every coffee review on the site, broken down by country, region and brand.

Union Roasted Rwanda Maraba

Country: Rwanda
Region: Maraba
Brand: Union Roasted
Rating:
Union are London-based coffee roasters who have been around since 2001, and are now fairly readily available in supermarkets. Many of their coffees are sourced under their "Direct Trade" model, sourced directly from the farms and cooperatives – while this is more of a rule than an exception in premium coffee, it's nice to see ...

Suntory Boss Silky Drip
Suntory Boss Silky Drip

Brand: Suntory
Rating:
The sheer number of different canned coffees available in Japan is breathtaking. It's all the more surprising when you consider that there are only really 3 or 4 companies making them. Suntory are one of my favourites - not only do they make some cracking whisky, but their vending machine coffee is among the ...
Extract Coffee Roasters Original Espresso
Extract Coffee Roasters Original Espresso

Brand: Extract
Rating:
I have to confess that I'm not sure where these beans came from; Extract Coffee are based in Bristol but I'm fairly sure I've never visited them and don't recall how the coffee came to be in my cupboard! Still, as they're the folks who provide the coffee for Bristol Beer Factory's delicious Mocha Stout, I ...
Waitrose Kwonggi Mountain

Country: Papua New Guinea
Region: Eastern Highlands
Brand: Waitrose
Rating:
I've learned more geography in the last year or two of writing about coffee than I ever did at school. The Kwonggi Mountain Range is, according to the packet, located in Papua New Guinea. The only problem with this new knowledge is that I'm not convinced it's true. There's no mention of any Kwonggi ...

Lavazza Qualita Oro

Brand: Lavazza
Rating:
I have a slight blind spot when it comes to Lavazza. I know that they claim to be "Italy's favourite coffee", but unfortunately I've mostly seen their name outside pubs. Now I love pubs, but if there's one thing that no pub ever seems capable of doing, it's brewing a decent cup of ...

Bewley's Gold Roast

Brand: Bewley's
Rating:
Since I've been reviewing coffee from Irish producer Bewley's, I've noticed that they are now stocked in our local Waitrose. While I'm certain that my reviews are not entirely responsible, it does at least mean they are more easily available than before! This is Gold Roast, a coffee on the weaker side of my ...

Waitrose Monsooned Malabar AA Coffee Beans

Country: India
Region: Malabar
Brand: Waitrose
Rating:
I usually buy coffee pre-ground, which no doubt coffee purists will tell me is a terrible thing, but frankly life is too short to be messing about grinding coffee myself. There are, of course, exceptions to every rule. If an interesting coffee is only available in bean form, or if I need it to ...

Clipper One For The Road

Brand: Clipper
Rating:
Clipper are a company better known for their teas – indeed, the company is more properly called "Clipper Teas" – but they have a small range of both ground and instant coffee available too. This is their One For The Road blend, a strong coffee from the Americas. It is, apparently, a coffee with ...

Cherizena Ethiopian Yirgacheffe

Country: Ethiopia
Region: Yirgacheffe
Brand: Cherizena
Rating:
When I started review coffees here, it was from a position of substantial ignorance. Although I'd been drinking more and more of it, thanks to our work coffee club, trying a new coffee was always a bit of a leap into the unknown – especially as virtually every brand claims to be "rich, ...

Bewley's Rich Roast

Brand: Bewley's
Rating:
A return to Irish producer Bewley for today's coffee, and it's interesting to see how different coffee companies provide information to their drinkers. As I mentioned in earlier reviews, Puro go to remarkable lengths to let you know what's in their coffee – not just the country they're from, but right down to the ...
