After a remarkably booze-filled festive period, it's about time to get back to the caffeinated side of life! Today we're back to Central America, and the Huehuetenango region of Guatemala.
Finca La Esperanza is a relatively light roasted coffee, as the picture hopefully shows.
Despite this, the grounds have a rich fruity aroma - apricots softened by milk chocolate, with just a hint of citrus peel in the background.
Brewed, there's more stone fruit along with some sweet caramel and a little fresh cut wood.
In the mouth it's in interesting balance; initially there's quite an acidic edge but that's quickly countered by light caramel. Touches of soft apricots follow, before the acidic tannins return along with a slight orange peel dimension for a long, drying finish.
Interesting and complex, this is one of those coffees that has grown on me the more I drink it - 3.5 stars.
