Brouwerij de Molen is one of those breweries I find hard to resist when I see their simple black and white labels sat on the shelf. They're never subtle beers, and can be truly remarkable - which makes their often high price worth the gamble.
The more observant among you may notice that I managed to take a picture of the back of the bottle here. In my defence, it's Christmas and I've been drinking lots of monster beers!
Pijl & Boog translates as 'Bow & Arrow', although quite how that relates to the beer I'm unclear. It's a 10.3% ABV amber coloured ale, and sits in the glass looking fairly flat.
The aroma is curious; rich and fruity with sweet oranges, apricots and honey along with a subtle dry spice.
It's wonderfully complex in the mouth; chewy toffee with cherry fruit and just enough resiny hops to stop the stickiness from becoming overwhelming. The alcohol is clearly present but is gentle and reserved.
The flatness in the appearance remains though; there's virtually no carbonation which is spoils the overall beer - it's a real shame because aside from that there's a lot to love here.
An easy 3.5 stars; it could have been 4.5 if it hadn't lost it's condition.
