I have to confess that I’ve never come across Glenburgie before. Apparently owned by Pernod Ricard, much of it’s production goes into Ballantine’s – but other than that it seems to be a remarkably anonymous distillery.
Still, many of the independent bottlers seem to extract a cask or two from the distillery which is probably a good sign that it’s good drinking in it’s own right too.
Glenburgie Batch 2 is a pale golden whisky, bottled at 50.1% ABV.
The nose is sweetly citrus; satsumas and lemons with light honey notes beneath. Watered, it loses the citrus character, with pear coming through instead, with touches of barley.
In the mouth it’s initially honey sweet, quickly joined by soft pears and crisp, green apples. It’s creamy, with just a hint of wet oak lurking, and the alcohol is quite pronounced.
With water, the alcohol is far more controlled; the fruit becomes peachy, maybe even a little tropical. The creaminess remains, and there’s more of a gentle oaky tannin in the finish.
I wasn’t sure about this one, but watered it’s a fruity, easy drinking dram. 3.5 stars.
