Advent: Day 7 – Roughstock Montana Bourbon

Advent Review Whisky

3.0 stars

Another day, another state and this time it’s Montana!

Roughstock is the first legal distillery in Montana since Prohibition, and the first to be making whiskey in the state for over 100 years.

Roughstock Montana Bourbon is a blend of four different whiskies with varying corn, wheat, rye and malt contents, bottled at a very reasonable 45% ABV.

The nose is surprising; more scotch than bourbon. Barley, hot buttered toast and small touches of dried lemon peel. Watered, the aromas open out a little, with hints of grain alcohol  and more citrus notes.

In the mouth the scotch style continues; there’s a little sugar sweetness, oatmeal biscuit, and hints of lime. The finish is sharp, and a little acidic.

Water turns the sweetness more fudgey, and loses much of the cereal notes. The finish still lingers, but is softer with delicate woody spices.

This is a curious bourbon, and not at all what I was expecting. Pleasant and drinkable, I give it 3 stars.
