The 1824 Series from Macallan is a range of sherry-aged whiskies. The range carries no age statement, and each whisky is named simply for its colour - from Gold through to Ruby.

1824, of course, refers to the year in which the distillery was originally founded.

Macallan Amber 1824 Series is from the paler end of the range, definitely on the pale side of amber.

The nose shows the sherry influence, with raisins and gentle spicy oak, and soft brown sugar. Over time, vanilla notes start to appear. Watered, the sweetness drops away and fresh apple begins to come through.

In the mouth it's light and fresh; green apples, lemonade and just an edge of ginger in the finish. Water takes the spice away, but it remains light.

It's a nice dram, light, refreshing and very easy drinking. It lacks a little in complexity, but still deserves 3.5 stars.
