India has a long history of loving whisky, but it's only in the last decade or so that they've started producing single malts of their own. Until now, I've never had the chance to try an Indian whisky, which makes today's advent dram all the more exciting.

Paul John Edited is a 46% ABV whisky produced in Goa, on the West coast of India and uses a blend of both Indian and Scottish barley.

(Edited to add: the wonderful @cowfish has pointed out to me that it is in fact 100% Indian barley, but Paul John import Scottish peat to smoke some of it, given the lack of Indian peat)

The nose is intriguing; raw barley, a hint of green apples and wet moss with just an echo of cold bonfire smoke at the end. Watered, the malt is more prominent and there's a little more smoke released as well.

In the mouth there's a honey sweetness that is quickly joined by a slightly reserved peppery kick. Some wood slowly emerges and cold ash, while the sweetness gently rumbles on throughout. The finish is lingering and tingling, with a slight tannic burst. Water tones down the spice, bringing wood and smoke to the fore - the sweetness is less obvious but it's still there, balancing things nicely.

I'm pretty impressed by this; it's different, subtle and delicious - 3.5 stars.
