Advent: Day 11 – Glenfiddich 18 Year Old

Advent Review Whisky

Back to Speyside for today’s whisky – more specifically, Dufftown.

I’ve watched far too much Simpsons in my life, so whenever I hear “Dufftown”, I can’t help thinking it must be where Duff Beer comes from. Someone really needs to set up a brewery there.

Glenfiddich 18 Year Old is finished in Oloroso casks, although the relatively light colour suggests it didn’t spend too long there.

The nose is not as fruity as I’d expect, either – soft caramel, cooked apples and hints of oak. Water emphasises the wood, bringing out cinnamon notes and a slight ginger warmth.

The sherry cask is more obvious in the mouth; sweet red berry fruit with honey, a touch of woody spice and a lingering, slightly pithy finish. Watered, much of the sweetness is lost, making the initial taste a little bland. The finish, however, is somehow more powerful with a long, warming and spicy character that lasts surprisingly well.

It’s not a bad dram, but it doesn’t excite me. 2.5 stars.
